Hydrolyzed marine collagen: how to take it and what results to expect
From around age 25 or 30, the body produces less and less collagen. It shows little by little: skin loses firmness, looks drier and fine lines start to appear.
The hydrolyzed marine collagen has become one of the favorite supplements for caring for your skin from within. But how well does it work, and how should you take it to get the most out of it? Here's what the evidence says.
What is hydrolyzed marine collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and gives structure to skin, hair, nails and joints. The hydrolyzed marine version comes from fish and is broken down into small peptides, which makes it easier to absorb.
What does the evidence say?
Two recent meta-analyses of clinical trials (2023 and 2024) found that taking hydrolyzed collagen improves skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo, especially with 8 weeks of use or more. The authors note that study quality varies and that more independent research is needed.
Consistency matters most: take it every day for at least 8 weeks.
Powder or capsules?
- Powder, such as Lemon-flavored Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen: a higher dose in a single sachet and easy to dissolve.
- Capsules, such as Collagen-C: convenient to carry, nothing to prepare.
Why with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and zinc?
- The vitamin C supports the body's natural collagen formation.
- The hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain water.
- The zinc contributes to the normal maintenance of skin, hair and nails.
How to take it to get the most out of it
- Take it every day; consistency matters more than timing.
- Eat enough protein throughout the day.
- Assess results after 8 to 12 weeks.
- Wear sunscreen: the sun is one of the main causes of collagen loss.
Dissolve it in cold water in the morning: the lemon flavor makes it refreshing and it's easy to turn into a ritual.
Precautions
- If you have a fish or shellfish allergy, don't take marine collagen.
- If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or have kidney disease, check with your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Does collagen make you gain weight?
