Minoxidil for beard: how to use it, how long results take and precautions
Patches on the cheeks, a mustache that never quite connects to the beard, a line that never looks even… If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. And you've probably heard about minoxidil.
Here's, without exaggeration, what it can do for your beard, how to use it properly and what precautions to take so it works safely.
Does minoxidil work on the beard?
Minoxidil was originally approved for the scalp, so using it on the beard is off-label. Even so, there's evidence behind it: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial tested 3% minoxidil lotion for 16 weeks and found a modest but significant increase in facial hair.
Results depend heavily on genetics. Minoxidil can help fill in sparse areas, but it doesn't create follicles where there are none.
Gel or lotion: which one to choose?
- Gel, such as B&B Minoxidil 5% Gel: it runs less, is precise on small areas and dries quickly.
- Lotion, such as B&B Minoxidil 5% Lotion: it covers large areas and its spray makes it very practical.
Both are compounded medicines and require a medical prescription.
How to apply it correctly
- Wash and dry your face. Clean skin absorbs better.
- Apply only to sparse areas, in the amount your doctor indicates, usually once or twice a day.
- Spread with your fingers and wash your hands afterwards.
- Let it dry completely before going to bed or applying other products.
- Be consistent. Skipping days is the most common reason for not seeing results.
Always apply it at the same time, for example after your morning shower and before bed. Making it a habit makes all the difference.
How long until you see results?
The first hairs, fine and light, usually appear between 2 and 4 months. Over time they can become thicker and darker. If you stop treatment, some of the gains may be lost, so it's best to agree with your doctor on how long to use it and how to stop.
Side effects and precautions
- The most common effects are dryness, itching or redness where it's applied.
- Less often there may be dizziness, palpitations or swelling. If that happens, stop and see your doctor.
- Don't apply it to irritated or broken skin, and avoid contact with the eyes.
- Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or for minors. Keep it away from pets, especially cats.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same minoxidil I use for my hair on my beard?
It's better to use a product designed for the face, at the dose your doctor recommends.
Can I combine it with beard oils or balms?
Yes, but apply them once the minoxidil has dried completely.
Do I need a prescription to buy it?
Yes. If you don't have one, you can book a free teleconsultation.
