What is a compounding pharmacy and how does it work in Mexico?
Your doctor prescribes an exact dose… and the pharmacy tells you that strength doesn't exist. Or the only available medicine contains a dye that doesn't agree with you. That's what compounding pharmacies are for.
A compounding pharmacy doesn't just sell medicines: it prepares them to measure for each patient, following their doctor's prescription to the letter. Here's how it works, when it makes sense and how to order a formula online without leaving home.
What is a compounded medicine?
It's a medicine prepared individually for a specific patient. The doctor defines the active ingredient, the dose and the form (capsule, cream, gel, lotion, solution), and a pharmacy team prepares it in the lab.
A brand-name medicine is mass-produced in fixed doses. A compounded one is adjusted to you: dose, form and excipients.
When does a compounded formula make sense?
- The dose you need isn't available commercially, for example an in-between strength.
- You prefer a different form: a gel instead of tablets, a lotion instead of a cream.
- You're sensitive to an excipient such as dyes, preservatives or lactose, and it's best to leave it out.
- Your doctor wants to combine several actives in a single formula to simplify treatment.
Do I need a prescription?
It depends on the product. Compounded medicines do require a prescription, because they're prepared for one patient at a dose set by their doctor. Food supplements and dermocosmetics don't need one.
In our shop you'll see clearly which products require one. In those cases, send us your prescription online from the product page and we'll send you a quote. Don't have a prescription yet? Book a free teleconsultation: a doctor reviews your case and, if appropriate, recommends a treatment.
How is quality guaranteed?
In Mexico, compounded medicines must be prepared according to the Farmacopea de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos (FEUM) and COFEPRIS health regulations. In practice, that means:
- Raw materials from qualified suppliers, with a certificate of analysis.
- Documented preparation procedures and trained staff.
- Weighing, labeling and traceability controls for every preparation.
- Oversight by a licensed health officer.
How to order your compounded medicine online
- Choose your product or ask us for a personalized formula.
- Send your prescription (photo or PDF) from the product page.
- Get your quote: a pharmacist reviews the prescription and confirms the price and preparation time.
- Get it at home: we prepare your formula and ship it anywhere in Mexico.
Keep a clear photo of your prescription, with the doctor's name, signature and license number visible. That makes the review faster.
